Holiday Decorating Contest

To stimulate and enhance a sense of community by rewarding residents that go above-and-beyond in decorating their home for the winter holiday season.  Award Guidelines will be established by the Parks and Special Events  Commission and approved by the Board of Trustees for the Village of Carpentersville.  Awards will be procured with funds received from “video gaming.”


First, second, third and honorable mention awards will be determined by a group of contest judges established by the Parks and Special Commission.  Residents who wish to participate in the contest must submit a brief application online.  The link for the online application is provided below.  The contest judges will establish deadlines for submittal, review, and disbursement of awards.  Award descriptions are illustrated below.


There are two contest categories that residents may elect to compete in they are:

  • Amateur Category : Decorators that are new to the home decorating concept, but interested in participating in the community contest.
  • Advanced Category : Decorators that take holiday decorating to the next level!


All Carpentersville Residents are welcome to participate with the exception of the following:

  • Winners from the 2015 Holiday decorating contest. (sorry, let’s give everyone a chance).
  • Elected officials of the Village Board of Trustees, any appointed Village commission member.
  • Village employees.


  • Only decorations visible from the roadway will be subject to grading


November 17th , 2016 – Official contest kickoff.  Contest will be published on the Village website, social media, and newsletters.

December 11th , 2016  – Contest submission deadline.  Fill out the online contest application by this date.

December 13th-18th, 2016 – Contest judges will tour the community and rate applicants. (Be Ready)

January 3rd, 2017 – Contest winners will be announced at the Village of Carpentersville Board of Trustee’s meeting


Gift Cards from local businesses will be awarded to the winners, as follows:

Applicant Grading Criteria

Total of 20 possible points based on the criteria below:

CREATIVITY: The creativity or “uniqueness” of an applicant’s decorations.  Does something make the home stand apart from other applicants or residents that decorated their home?  (1-5 Possible Points)
SCOPE: The quantity and overall scope of the applicant.  A lot of lights – a lot of points. (1-5 Possible Points)
VARIETY: The variety of decorations.  Does the applicant have something more than just lights?  Creative scenes, colors, yard decorations, etc. (1-5 Possible Points)
WOW-FACTOR: The memorability and admiration that the applicant receives from passing vehicles. (1-5 Possible Points)
