ABOUT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Carpentersville Fire Department provides fire and emergency medical services to the residents of the Village, as well as the surrounding Carpentersville and Countryside Fire Protection District. The department provides several other services, which include but are not limited to fire prevention, fire investigation, public education, specialized rescue that includes: confined space, trench rescue, high angle, hazardous materials, water and ice rescue, and building collapse.

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

Applicants for the position of Firefighter with the Carpentersville Fire Department must meet the following criteria:

RESIDENCE

Applicants for examination must be citizens of the United States. Applicants must also reside within 40 miles of the Village of Carpentersville village limits within one year of being hired.

AGE

Applicants must be a minimum age of 21 years and maximum age of 35 years at the time of the written exam date (April 20, 2023) and at such time as the final eligibility list is posted, as well as when the list is executed at the time of appointment, unless otherwise exempt by state statute.

EDUCATION

Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED.

LICENSE & CERTIFICATION 

Applicants must be Illinois Certified Firefighter II (OSFM), IFSAC, or ProBoard Firefighter II due at the time of appointment.

Applicants must have a valid and current Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) or National Registry EMT- Basic License at time of application deadline (EMT-Paramedic due at time of appointment).

Applicants must have current and valid Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) and Aerial Ladder Climb Certification dated within one year prior to the date of the application deadline.

Applicants must have a valid driver’s license with the ability to obtain a class B non CDL.

OTHER

Applicants must have no felony convictions, and must abide by the requirements set forth by the Board of the Fire and Police Commissioners.

APPLICATION PROCESS

When the eligibility list is being developed and applications are being accepted, applications are electronically submitted through ApplyToServe:

PHASE 1: Submit Application:
Applicants must complete and electronically submit all application materials by an established deadline. The application fee is being waived for all applicants.

At minimum, candidates are required to submit copies of the following documents as part of their application:

  • Valid state-issued driver's license;
  • Social Security Card;
  • Birth Certificate; -OR- US Passport;
  • High school diploma (or transcripts) or G.E. D. equivalent;
  • Copy of CPAT card and Ladder Climb;
  • Copy of EMT-B Card issued by IDPH or NREMT;
  • Copy of Basic Operations Firefighter (Firefighter II) Certification (if applicable);
  • Copy of college transcripts (official or unofficial) -OR- copy of diploma (if applicable);
  • Copy of Military Form DD-214 (if applicable)

PHASE 2: Written Examination
Following completion and submission of all application materials and review of minimum qualifications, successful applicants will be invited to participate in a remote on-line written exam. All eligible candidates will receive an email approximately one week prior to the date of the written examination regarding their status in the process.

PHASE 3: Preference Points Tabulation
Within 10 days after the posting of the Initial Eligibility List, applicants may claim preference point for veteran service, fire cadet completion, education, paramedic certification status, experience, and residency.

PHASE 4: Oral Interview
The Board will select a number of the highest-rated applicants in descending order after completion of the Written Test to participate in the oral examination of testing. Applicants will be notified of their eligibility to proceed to this step approximately one week prior to the interview process.

PHASE 5: Conditional Offer of Employment
Applicants successfully completing the oral interview shall be placed on the Initial Eligibility Register. A Final Eligibility Register will be valid for two years from its establishment. From this Final Eligibility Register, applicants shall be appointed in descending order if/when a job opening presents itself. Full employment will be withheld until a successful completion of the following:

  • Submission of required documentation:
  • Background Investigation;
  • CPAT Certification;
  • Psychological Examination y Licensed Clinical Psychologist;
  • Medical Examination
