Freedom of Information Act (FOIA)
The Illinois Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) is a state statute (5 ILCS 140/1) that provides citizens access to all government documents and records and governs the inspection of them. It is the policy of the Village of Carpentersville to comply with all requests in accordance with state law unless there is an exemption in the statute that protects the confidentiality of certain records.
Requests for documents can be made through our Online Freedom of Information (FOIA) Center.
You can -
- Find information that was previously requested
- Submit a new request
- View the status of your inquiries.
Note - The first time you use the Center you will be asked to create an account. This will allow for the most efficient processing of your request and the records will be sent to you electronically.
In our efforts to provide the public easy access to certain records, please visit the Village of Carpentersville's Transparency Page on our website that will link you to frequently requested documents. Also before submitting a FOIA request, please consider searching the Document Archive. Certain requests which would reveal information that is normally protected under FOIA due to privacy or public safety are not available to the public and would not appear in the document archives.
Requests for information should be in writing on the form provided by the Village FOIA Request Form; however, requests can be made by letter, telephone, fax or email. Certified copies are available upon request.
Request Time Frame
By law, all FOIA requests will be answered within 5 business days and commercial requests within 21 business days. All original documents may be viewed by appointment, if copies are requested and are over 50 pages there will be a $0.15 per page charge. Additional charges may be imposed for large format copies, certain electronic media or color copies; any request requiring duplication services will be charged the actual cost for the duplication.
If your request requires an extension you will be notified within the 5 business day time frame. If your request is denied in portion or whole you will be advised of those exemptions that apply and of the appeal process afforded to you by law.
